I’ll be Speaking at ADC24

How to read scientific DSP papers and turn them into code

I’m honored to be giving a talk at the Audio Developer Conference this year! My talk is titled How To Read Scientific DSP Publications and Turn Them Into Code.

It’s about how to make sense of academic papers and patents if you’re not an academic or patent lawyer.

The abstract of the talk is as follows:

Academic research papers contain exciting new ideas but typically no ready-to-use source code. Papers are not written for the layperson and are often filled with jargon and inscrutable equations. It’s up to the reader to decipher the math and wrestle through dense theory to transform these ideas into C++ code. This can be a daunting task, especially for developers who do not have an academic or mathematics background.

Patents, in particular expired ones, are also a great source of ideas and are even harder to untangle! Fortunately, with a little effort you can learn to read these perplexing documents and extract their secrets. This talk aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice and will show useful techniques for quickly making sense of scientific publications and patents, so that you can finally start turning them into code.

It’s going to be quite the challenge to fit everything I want to say in just 45 minutes. 😅

ADC

ADC24 takes place from 11 - 13 November 2024 in Bristol, UK. You can also join online. More info about the conference

I have attended ADC for the last few years but always online, so this will be my first in-person Audio Developer Conference. I’m looking forward to seeing you there!

P.S. There is a free event called ADCx Gather on the first of November. Just like the online version of ADC this takes place in Gather.town in the web browser. It’s free, so no reason not to attend! You can find out more at audio.dev/adcx-gather-info/.
